John Hooper is The Economist’s Italy correspondent. He has been a foreign correspondent for over 30 years and reported from more than 50 countries, working for – among others – the BBC, the Daily Telegraph, the Guardian, Reuters and NBC.
An award-winning author, his book The Italians has appeared in numerous best-seller lists. His previous work, The Spaniards, won the Allen Lane Award for a best first work of non-fiction. It has since twice been updated as The New Spaniards, most recently in 2006.
John lectures at Stanford University in Florence, and in 2021 he became an honorary fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. In his latest book, he collaborates with Anna Kraczyna to provide a new, annotated translation for Penguin Classics of The Adventures of Pinocchio.
